Former Super Falcons and Wolfsburg striker, Ugochi Desire Oparanozie, has revealed her fear for the future of female football in Nigeria.
The player’s drive and passion played a huge factor, but now that other teams have caught up with us, I think it’s because we didn’t do as much as we ought to administratively,” the 30-year-old said at the 2024 LIS Conference.

Nigeria’s female medallists at last month’s Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, including world record holders Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu and Alice Folashade Oluwafemiayo, were treated to a spectacular night of fun, food, music, and rousing compliments on Friday, September 9th at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja in a colorful event organized by the Ladies in Sport (LIS) International and The LiveWire Project in partnership with Berrywood Capital and refreshed by Coca-Cola.
LIS 2022 Conference: Three women athletes, Alimosho Ladies receive grants
The Organisers of the Ladies In Sports International Conference (LIS) on Thursday gave sports grants of Two Hundred Thousand Naira each to three young women athletes and a football team, Alimosho Ladies at the 2022 Edition held at the Eko Hotels And Suites.
Among the recipients of the grants are Imo Strikers Star, Harmony Achiefula, whose goalscoring prowess was the talk of the town in the NWFL Nationwide League, Stella Ayankele, currently, the best home-based 100m hurdler.
Being a woman in sports is not easy – Funke Oshonaike
Nigeria’s 7–time table tennis Olympian, Funke Oshonaike, shared her personal emotional journey at the 1st Virtual Ladies in Sports Conference which took place on the 1st of July.
“It is not easy being a woman in sports. There’s so many standards society sets for you that can become a distraction. So I encourage young girls to keep their eyes on the goal. ” she said.
Funke Oshonaike was joined by other elite athletes like Barbara Banda, Captain of the Zambian women’s football team, Evelyn Akhator, 2 time Afrobasket champion for Nigeria and 2016 LIS grant recipient, Ruth Usoro.
“We have seen some improvement in some areas of women’s sport, but there’s still a long way to go.”
